SURVEYING THE SITUATION

Now that the boat is here in Mississippi with me, I'm ready to prepare it for use again. That, along with restoring two Sunfish with my friend, will comprise most of my weekends through to July. That is, when we're not actually using the boats! Two days after we got back from Wisconsin, I headed over to his house to raise the mast and check the rigging. Unfortunately, since it was after work, we didn't have much time before the sun went down. Nevertheless, we got the mast and jib up. Here are some areas that require attention, in order of how critical I think they are:

  • The hull is gouged where it came off the trailer a bit
  • The mainsail won't raise all the way for some reason
  • I'm not sure the forestay is attached correctly
  • I don't think the rudders are aligned properly
  • On the transom, where the rudders attach, the plastic has flaked and cracked
  • The trampoline has pulled out of the rear cross bar
  • The trampoline is filthy
  • The hulls are filthy
  • The sails are filthy
  • The rudders are filthy
  • I don't like the shackles with the little key-ring things and want to replace them
  • Some new lines may be in order
  • There is a piece broken off the bottom of the mast
  • I don't have any trapeze harnesses

  •

Here you can see the flaked and cracked top of the left hull.
    The other hull looks similar.

Here you can see the hook broken off the bottom of the mast. I don't think this presents a safety hazard,
but it certainly makes raising & lowering it a bit more difficult! I don't know if I can replace this piece.

The mainsail won't go all the way up. It feels like the halyard is hitting something just before it gets to the top.
This weekend we'll drop the mast and inspect to see what the problem might be. I'm not sure if the cable is supposed to
go up in the groove like that or not. It couldn't be easily extracted. Anyone?

I think the forestay is supposed to attach in the middle of this bracket and the quick-release should be for
the jib clew, but we couldn't get the mast to go far enough forward to get the forestay down to the bracket.
I guess we could move the sidestays up a bit since they're set right in the middle, but something seems amiss. Comments please!

When it got too dark to work on the boat anymore, I took this picture and went inside. :)
