Week Nine
Day 39 - Tuesday, 22 April 2003: Didn't do anything but
study on Monday since the Maintenance guys had been given a day off for their
excellent rating during our recent inspection. No crew chiefs = no flying.
Tuesday was a tough day for me. We started out with our new academic unit
Advanced Instruments, which so far just seems to be about how to fly
instrument approaches. That was fun, but after that we went to the flight room
and my morale was kind of low by that point; since the previous Friday was a
pretty bad day and now here I am back in the same place. I had a jet ride that
day and although it went better than I expected, I didn't really feel any
better. Tuesday night I just studied & stuff; and then had a really nice
telephone conversation with Ming which made me feel somewhat better.
Day 40 - Wednesday, 23 April 2003: Today I woke up still feeling kind of down. As a class we had our weekly quiz, and I missed one question for a 95%; which was about average for the class. Then I had a jet ride and although I thought my flying was particularly bad on that sortie, my IP apparently disagreed, saying that although there were areas where I *definitely* needed improvement, I really impressed him in others. So that made me feel a little bit better, but not too much. I was still down for some reason unbeknownst to me. I ran into Ricky (one of my academic instructors from Phase I, remember?) and we had a little chat that also cheered me up. So I wound up leaving Wednesday evening feeling somewhat less down than I had been for the last few days. That evening I studied more.
Day 41 - Thursday, 24 April 2003: This morning I awoke and it was raining, just like I expected. I had been watching a weather system moving into the area on the radar last night, so I wasn't surprised when it was right over us in the morning. I got up a little before seven, showered, and headed over to tLK for breakfast and a change-of-scenery in which to study some. I read there for about an hour and had an omelet; then back to the OSS for our second lecture in the Advanced Instruments unit. Still more "how to read an approach plate." Then we went to our flight room in the 37th and boy was the rain coming down! I didn't get much time to hang out there, though, since I had an "EP sim" at 12:45 (where the instructor throws all kinds of emergencies at you to solve) and I had a lot of fun in there. He even wrote "GOOD 1st SIM!!" on my grade sheet. This afternoon I was supposed to fly, but what with having a tornado watch in the area and everything that wasn't going to happen. So we just hung out in the flight room and studied until late afternoon when we were released.
